The greatest living NT scholar is ...

In my absence over the last few days, an enormous number of fantastic posts have been published on numerous blogs, and I’ll be busy reading, rather than writing!

So I thought I’d start of a bit on the light side and ask you a simple question:

Who do you think is the greatest living New Testament scholar, and why?

Of course there are no right or wrong answers, but I’d be interested to hear the sort of names and reasons people suggest – for motives that will become clearer in a later series. But note: only those who are living qualify (and the ‘living in heaven’ loophole won’t impress me and shall be duly ignored). Any who suggest the name ‘Chris Tilling’ are, of course, a tad premature, but their brown-nosing shall be financially rewarded.

If you are interested, my church retreat was a sheer delight, and I feel so holy that I really ought to be throwing my jacket/mantle on people and blowing at you through a microphone ...

But as it is, I’ll content myself with shouting TOUCH! at you.

*Blog readers the world over shake at their keyboard and burst into tongues, household pets fall over etc.*

Right, enough blogging for now, I’m going to go and be sanctified somewhere else for a while.

Come to think of it, I may well show up later with another post in my Hans Küng series, though I suppose I should write that thing for Ben in his series on ‘I love theologian X’ which I keep procrastinating!

"... I don't like anyone very much."

If you can name the group, the lead singer and the album I will send you free of charge tickets to their next concert.

A clue: The lead singers most famous single could have been the theme song for "Left Behind".

Hengel, Bauckham, Wright, Evans. And probably in that ORDER!

Hi Clay ... and a free air ticket?!

Hi Sean, then you will like my next post...

I'm tempted to say Wright (perhaps by the end of his life), but I'm going to go with Hengel.

Is Joseph A. Fitzmyer still alive? He should at least get a nomination. Of course R.Bauckham is certainly in the running.

McKnight says Dale Allison, and his vote probably counts more than mine.

Add a z in there somewhere. Sorry.

Yes Fitmyer is still alive. We chatted in Philadelphia. And, had he died, the always vigilant CBA secretary would have informed us all.

I agree- after Vouga, Fitzmyer is next on the list.

What a great bunch of names!
My favourite scholar, well, its embarassing to say actually as he has read this blog before, and perhaps does more often now.
