GodTube?

Have you ever bothered looking through the contents of Godtube? It's appears to be a Christian type of Youtube, and I'll be upfront: I much prefer the latter.

Though Godtube is filled with a mixture of material, as I expected it is dominated by conservative evangelical material. Why is this so? You may ask. Here is my answer: I know of one fundamentalist blog which enjoys many more readers then even the biggest biblioblogs entertain. All he has to do is write about his breakfast – I'm being serious – and multiple comments are left. Now, one day I wondered why this was the case and came to the simple conclusion that there are more conservatives in the west (where access to a computer is more possible), and they also tend to be more active on the media front (hence all of the various Christian TV channels)

Anyway, Godtube. One of the first things I stumbled upon was this number.

The speaker asks, does God love sinners?

And concludes God doesn't.

And anybody who thinks he is wrong is a deceived heretic evil scripture twisting liberal. Or more or less.

'Then what about John 3:16?', he asks.

Well, the Greek word for love is in the aorist, he notes, which basically means, after he's finished showing he doesn't know what the sexual-related-word-ing hell he's talking about, that God only hates sinners.

This kind of thing makes me angry, frustrated and sad.

And my belief in a straightforward understanding of the perspicuity of scripture is melting.

When I see upsetting things like this I realise afresh how badly the evangelical and fundamentalist churches need trained teachers who could recognise the significance of an aorist from a dancing grapefruit.

There was a guy a few months ago that was trying to get his satire of fundamentalists on GodTube. He succeeded for a short time but then the owners of GodTube figured him out.

Idiots are a troubling tribe.

See this is why so many of us non-fundamentalists tend to have Luddite tendencies. First, there was "Christian" TV. We hated it and let the fundies have it and soon they dominated the airwaves and grew while we shrank.

Then, they started dominating all the "new media" while most theologians and biblical scholars were still saying, "What's an ipod? I finally managed to learn how to send email last week." Etc.

Most people on Godtube would disagree with the notion that God doesn't love sinners. Careful not to judge the whole site in the basis of one stupid video.

I find Godtube disturbing as well, and I watched the business with the infiltrating satirist as well.

But, one quick comment on the perspicuity of Scripture. It should not be disconnected from the work of the Spirit. Anyone can read the Bible and twist it to their own perverted uses. But, those upon whom the Spirit works find an understanding of all that is necessary for salvation within Scripture.

I'm sure you know this, Chris, but it is good to be constantly reminded of the use that we humans make of Scripture on the basis of our own strength and the use that the Spirit makes of Scripture.

I am surprised no one has asked the important question yet:

What did you have for breakfast today?

I don't know what anyone thinks of Mike Horton from the Whitehorse but he basically said the same thing in a debate about the atonement. I don't think it always has something to do with your education or how computer savy you happen to be. Horton teaches at Westminster Seminary and his show has be going on for about 15 years. Don't get me wrong I respect the man and get alot from his ministry but I also realize theirs alot of so called non fundamentalists who suppress knowledge of the truth. You educate someone to the hilt but if they refuse to let go a noetic structure they will but an castle around it. Anyway anything I know is but I received grace.

Scott, that one on the emerging church was flippin awful!

Aaron, I judge it all by that video. Nay, I judge everybody in the whole world by that video ;-)

WTM, I entirely agree with you, and I would further limit teh clarity of scripture to the gospel.

Richie, thanks for asking mate!

Yes, I've watched some interesting and disturbing sermons on Godtube. Frankly, I bet God finds it freakin' hilarious. It's kind of akin to Jesus "Karate Chop" Action Figures - completely bass ackwards.

I hope you are right, for his sake!

Fundamentalist churches don't really need teaching, unless one defines "teaching" as taking the Bible and whupping them with it.

Interesting stuff. I appreciated your posting and podcasting on literalism from many moons ago...with the opening of the Creation Museum in my benighted land, I've been compelled to produce such a series myself.

It's framed at neoreformationist.blogspot.com. Your critical comments would be a blessing.
