Godpod 37

Yep, my first Godpod - joining Jane Williams, Mike Lloyd and Graham Tomlin, discussing theology and life. Our guest was the sharp minded and affable Oxford doctoral student, Stephen Backhouse, and we touched upon matters covered in his (freshly completed) thesis: A Kierkegaardian Critique of Christian Nationalism.

To be honest, sitting in that studio for the first time, with a sound guy behind glass, my new colleagues surrounding me, and with a microphone stuck in my face ... I felt a bit nervous. At least the microphone was only stuck in my face.

Click here to have a listen, download it, write abuseful messages in comment on it ... whatever yanks your chain.

Well done Chris - personally I thought you got off to a very good start. Started strongly - especially with the explanation about Chrisendom (although the address was a bit muddled) and your critique of how many biscuits were left.

Throughout the interview you pushed hard for answers from a scholar who was obviously trying to avoid such intense and well founded criticism of what nationalism is and whether drinking "tea" is national idolatry . You didn't shrink back. You pressed him for, and I quote, "A line in the sand"!

A very solid finish. He was obviously intimidated by your vastly superior knowledge of pauline writings in the NT. Your brought the "team" back to the Bible with an explanation of Philippians that will be talked about, I am sure, at the next SBL conference!

In all seriousness Chris (not that the above wasn't serious), from someone who was a radio announcer for several years, you did brilliantly. It is no easy task sitting in a room for an hour trying to host a conversation with thousands of people whom you will never meet! Well done!

Great episode, Chris, and glad you have joined the 'home team'. They have had Tom Wright on there before, and if the two of you are on there together, my iPod may just explode from all the excellent biblical commentary! Can't wait to hear more!

So do you think Paul wrote Titus or not? And either way do you think the 'all Cretans are liars' quote is actually a racist attack on the national character of Cretans, or does is fulfill a different purpose (Thiselton)?
And as an expat myself i can confirm that love of tetleys and marmite is not idolatry but merely true wisdom, and supporting English sport is just sad.

Damn, I can't listen to "Godpod 37" right now because my "Igod" is filled to capacity.

But...

I did read this recently...

If, as missionaries believe, people must hear the true religion or be damned, what about tribes in the middle of jungles where they will certainly never hear it?

As if scrambling to correct this oversight, God commissions the better-informed to search through the vines and provide them the code to heaven He forgot to provide. Missionaries are like God's software patch to fix a faulty program.

In the discussion re Kierkegaard the work on Imperialism and Paul appears relevant

This is the best conversation I've ever listened to on the relationship between God and nations, Patriotism and nationalism. It is thought-provoking.

Thanks Chris for the link.

Haha, Mark, thanks! That was a nice encouragement. I wasn't sure how it came across. I'm just glad that nobody could see the terrified expression on my face...

Thanks, Will! Flip, if Tom Wright joins in, I'll shut up and listen!

Wise Paroikos,
Do I think Paul wrote Titus. Nope. But do tell me more about Thiselton’s reasoning.

Celucien,
Thanks for your comment! So glad you enjoyed it! Send in a question for us to mull over ...
